Residence permit
A residence permit is a document that allows a foreign national to legally reside in another country for a specified period of time (temporary residence permit) or permanently (permanent residence permit). In Latvia, a residence permit may be requested on various grounds and is required if a foreign national plans to stay in Latvia for more than 90 days within a 180-day period.
Main Grounds for Obtaining a Residence Permit in Latvia

Employment or Business Activity:
A foreign national may obtain a residence permit if they are employed by a company registered in Latvia, carry out business activities, or establish a company by investing a specified amount of capital. -
Education:
Students admitted to accredited higher education institutions or vocational education institutions in Latvia may obtain a residence permit for the duration of their studies. -
Family Reunification:
If a family member of a foreign national is a Latvian citizen or holds a residence permit, it is possible to obtain a residence permit for the purpose of joining the family. -
Real Estate Acquisition:
A residence permit may also be requested by persons who acquire real estate in Latvia that meets certain minimum value thresholds and other legal requirements. This is a commonly used basis for obtaining a temporary residence permit. -
